CAPITAL REGION -- The annual Toys for Tots drive gets underway, but the Marines Corps reserve will no longer manage the program. Instead, the Marine Corps League, an organization of retired Marines will now take charge.
A number of companies are also lending a hand. Dunkin Donuts presented a check for $30,000 and Wal-Mart kicked in $20,000. Through the program, thousands of children in the Capital Region are able to receive a new toy during the holiday season.
"Or goal this year is to collect about 150,000 toys. To reach out to about 120,000 families. So, you are talking about giving a Christmas to kids who don't have that, which that feeling is like no other. If we bring a smile to a kids face, it is priceless," said Gunnery Sgt. Albert Roman, Toys for Tots program assistant coordinator.
The Nigro Companies also donated an empty storefront in the Hannaford Plaza in Rotterdam to use as a headquarters.
