ALBANY, N.Y. -- First responders have different challenges when on the scene of a crash involving hybrid cars. And in an effort to cut down on injuries, or even fatalities, State Police received special training on electric cars.

Cars that run on electricity can shock officers if they're not familiar with how the hybrid car works.

Staff St. Terry McDonald said, "Police officers and first responders across the country are better prepared regardless of the type of vehicle involved. Armed with this knowledge, not only protect ourselves but the public from the hazards any crash can involve."

The troopers were the first in the nation to receive this new training. The National Fire Protection Association hopes to implement the plan nationwide.
