POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The DEC has been called into Poughkeepsie to help get a hawk out of the Nelson House Annex.

The Nelson House is slated for demolition, but crews wanted to get the bird out well before any wrecking ball came in.

Experts say it's not uncommon for birds to nest in empty and abandoned buildings.

"And they do return, to see, because it is there nesting area and when they find there's no more nesting area, they go elsewhere, but it's not unusual. They fly out during the day when the construction activities occur and in the evening when it's quiet, they'll try to come back and this way with the windows open, they can come and go without being trapped," said Robert Balkind, Acting Commissioner of Dutchess County Public Works.

Crews broke windows in the building, hoping the bird would fly out on its own. It's still there, but the DEC hopes it will fly out before demolition crews arrive in the next five to ten days.
