POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Poughkeepsie teacher accused of stabbing her colleague multiple times at the high school in December took a plea deal in court Friday.

According to attorney Gary Greenwald, Ronette Ricketts, 40, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of first degree attempted manslaughter. Greenwald says her initial charge was for attempted murder.

Police say Ricketts used a screwdriver in December 2011 to stab her co-worker, Cynthia Glozier, at the high school. Following the incident, Ricketts was banned from the school.

According to Greenwald, the actions made by Ricketts were due to a mental illness. She faces three-and-a-half years in prison and will be sentenced January 3rd.
