Governor Cuomo has directed the New York Army and National Guard to mobilize in response to Hurricane Sandy. As a result, the Guard is in the process of deploying about 1,200 citizen soldiers and airmen to a number of assignments. MATTYDALE, N.Y. -- Members of the Air National Guard will be ready to aid authorities across the state when it comes to storm damage both Upstate, downstate, and in the North Country.

At the Hancock Air Base, about 50 troops met this morning and have been directed by Governor Cuomo to assist in whatever is needed.

Last year, the Army and the National Guard played a significant role in the state's response to Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.

The Guard has stocks of equipment set aside specifically for storms and is also prepared to deploy aircraft and satellite communications systems as needed. Many of the troops will also be ready with water tankers, chainsaws, and meals to assist those affected by significant flooding and wind damage.
