SOUTH DAKOTA -- The man convicted of killing a nine-year-old girl has been executed in South Dakota. YNN talked to Tina Curl, the child's mother, before she traveled there to witness Donald Moeller's execution.
Curl moved to Lake Luzerne after her daughter, Becky O'Connell, was killed in South Dakota in 1990. Police say Moeller kidnapped O'Connell from a convenience store. He was convicted and sentenced to death in 1997.
With the help of their neighbor, Curl and her family raised money to drive to the execution. Moeller received a lethal injection at the state penitentiary in Sioux Falls Tuesday night.
"At approximately 10:30 p.m. on October 30th, the execution of Donald Moeller was carried out with the warrant of execution in the laws of the state of South Dakota," said Donald Winder, Dept. of Corrections spokesperson.
"Finally, justice for Becky. After 22 years, five months, 23 days, the date of May 8th, 1990, when Don Moeller murdered our daughter Becky. He is dead," said David Curl, step-father of Becky O'Connell.
While the South Dakota governor said he takes no pleasure Moeller's death, he hopes the execution will bring some peace to Becky’s family.
