GREENFIELD, N.Y. – Neighbors tell us a shed was where Joshua Mcwain, 27, loved to hang out. But it's also where police say he buried his mother after he killed her Saturday morning.
Gloria Woodbeck said, "Shocked, totally shocked. I don't understand how that could happen and I don't understand how anyone could do that to their mom."
Joshua Mcwain was arrested early Halloween morning and charged with second degree murder for the killing of his mother, Carol Stanford. Police say they got into an argument in their Daniels Road home, when Mcwain allegedly struck his mother multiple times in the head with a blunt object.
"They were close," said Woodbeck.
"She was very friendly. She would come by and say hi to the dogs, but I've never spoken to him," said Cindy Merill.
But even without ever speaking to one another, Mcwain made quite an impression on his neighbors across the street.
"Every once in a while, we'd see him have a little tantrum, throwing things and yelling, but this is beyond that," said Randy Major.
Neighbors tell us they're used to seeing the pair walking and riding their bikes around the park. And they say in the days leading up to his arrest, Mcwain acted just the same.
Woodbeck said, "It's scary and for him to go on and wave like nothing even happen, that’s the scariest part."
Myron Woodbeck said, "He was at the corner of the shed and waved to me. He was always in the shed. He had a workshop in there, but as far as this goes, total shock.”
The investigation is ongoing and police say they are waiting for autopsy results to determine the official cause of death. One thing is for sure, though, this is a Halloween no one on Daniels Road will ever forget.
