HUDSON VALLEY, N.Y. -- Orange and Rockland is also experiencing significant outages across their service area.
Earlier, we spoke with O&R spokesman Mike Donovan, who says about 100,000 are still without power. And unfortunately, it’s going to be at least another 10 days for most customers until the power is restored and longer for others.
According to Donovan, 230,000 customers were originally affected when Sandy hit. He says damage was done to both the distribution system and transmissions, making it some of the worst he's ever seen.
Donovan said, "This is the worst storm in O&R history. It's twice as big as Irene. Irene was 120,000 customers for us, this is 230,000. We've repaired 13 of our 27 damaged transmission lines, seven of our 17 de-energized sub-stations and we've repaired 20 of our 105 downed distribution circuits, so that speaks of a damage profile that's unprecedented."
Donovan says there are about one thousand O&R employees and one thousand contractors from almost 20 states working to restore power
