BERNE, N.Y. -- A barn collapsed in the Town of Berne, trapping roughly 40 cows.
Albany County Sheriff's deputies, along with fire crews, responded to Colehill Road around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Officials say bales of hay on top of the second floor of the barn collapsed to the first floor, trapping the cattle.
Using farm tractors, crews were able to remove parts of the barn's walls and roof.
A number of cows died in the accident.
The cause of the barn collapse is still under investigation, but officials believe the weight of the new hay caused the second floor to cave in.
