ALBANY, N.Y. -- A downstate man is in critical condition at Albany Medical Center after he crashed his classic car into the back of a stopped tractor trailer.

State police say it happened just before 7 a.m. Thursday on the Thruway between exits 22 and 23.

Police say Michael Ferneczi, 43, was travelling north in a 1961 Chevrolet. Police say the driver of the tractor trailer pulled over and got out to check a loose chain on the trailer. They say he was not inside at the time and was not hurt.

The crash backed up traffic for about an hour.
