NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the marathon planned for this coming Sunday in New York City will not happen.

The historic race has been a source of contention in the days since Sandy, with many saying now is not the time for the city to be focusing on the race. Bloomberg maintained his support for the race this week, saying on several occasions that the marathon could help lift the city's economy.

In a statement, the mayor said, “The Marathon has been an integral part of New York City’s life for 40 years and is an event tens of thousands of New Yorkers participate in and millions more watch. While holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort, it is clear that it has become the source of controversy and division. The marathon has always brought our city together and inspired us with stories of courage and determination. We would not want a cloud to hang over the race or its participants, and so we have decided to cancel it. We cannot allow a controversy over an athletic event – even one as meaningful as this – to distract attention away from all the critically important work that is being done to recover from the storm and get our city back on track. The New York Road Runners will have additional information in the days ahead for participants.”

There is no word yet on if the race will be rescheduled or is all together cancelled.

Not all of the 47,000 runners registered to run in the marathon planned on going Sunday. Many have decided it would have been insensitive to run. A charity actually created a website urging runners to donate their rooms in New York City to people who have been displaced by Sandy. Here to talk about the news is one of the organizers of Race To Recover, Conley Wing Downing.
