COLUMBIA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Army veteran Chris Gibson has won the battle for the newly drawn 19th Congressional District seat. He defeated democratic challenger Julian Schreibman.

Gibson introduced himself to voters in new parts of the district, including Ulster, Dutchess and Sullivan counties, during his campaign. He says he is excited to get to get back to Washington next week.

"We have a farm bill that needs to get done. We have farmers that really need help. We have dairy farmers right now who can't even cover their cost of production," Gibson said.

The newly drawn district includes 11 counties.

Statement from Schreibman in regards to Election Day results:

“I want to congratulate Congressman Chris Gibson on his victory tonight. I wish him good health, energy, and wisdom to represent all of us in the 19th Congressional district. While we have differed on many issues, he has served with honor during his time in Congress. It has been an incredible experience meeting so many wonderful people across the Hudson Valley and the Catskills, and I look forward to the next chapter in my life which, most immediately will mean spending more time with my wonderful family.”
