CHESTER, N.Y. -- A fire destroyed a home in the Town of Chester. Police say it happened on Bellvale Lakes Road around 7:45 a.m. Thursday.

They say a passerby noticed fire coming from the top of the roof. The person called 911 and then knocked on the door to see if anyone was in the home.

Officials say the home has been vacant since the roof of the house was damaged by wind during Sandy. Police believe that vacancy led to the significant amount of fire damage the home sustained as the fire spread.

“We had pretty extensive fire at the time we got the call. Because the residence was unoccupied, it wasn't reported until someone driving by was able to notice there was a fire from the street. So there was pretty significant damage because of the delay of the call,” said Dan Doellinger, Town of Chester Police Chief.

Fire officials say the fire started in the attic of the home near the wood stove chimney, and believe the chimney may have been damaged during Sandy.

An official cause has not yet been determined.
