MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- We may still be a week away from Thanksgiving, but in Middletown they're already ready for Christmas.

A 25-foot spruce made the five-mile trek from its home to downtown Middletown on Wednesday. It's the 16th year a Christmas tree is up in Festival Square.

Organizers say they pick the tree they can visualize looking the best when decorated for the holidays. The process actually begins in August.

John Degnan, Executive Director of Downtown Middletown BID, said, "We call it interviewing the trees and we check out the condition, the size of probably about a dozen and a half to two dozen trees around the region."

Degnan said he was worried about the tree surviving Sandy but was relieved when it emerged from the storm intact.
