NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Only weeks after Sandy slammed the east coast, students at New Paltz say they have growing concerns over how natural disasters would impact Indian Point.

Protestors gathered at SUNY New Paltz, saying given the dangers of recent storms, the affected area surrounding Indian Point could one day be as harmful as Fukushima. Organizers say they hope the two reactors will be shut down before they are re-licensed in 2013 and 2015.

"There are twenty million people who live in the peak injury zone, but the evacuation planning zone is only a ten mile radius and realistically, it is not possible because people would still be affected," said Coleen Higgins, even organizer and SUNY New Paltz sophomore.

Indian Point's owner, Entergy Nuclear, has applied for new 20 year licenses for both reactors, which would keep them running into the 2030s.

Entergy says it has invested more than a billion dollars since purchasing the plant to strengthen and enhance every aspect of safety. Plant operations are also constantly reviewed by multiple independent federal inspectors who come to work at the plant each day.
