TROY, N.Y. -- Hudson Valley Community College is stepping up when it comes to accommodating student veterans. The college opened up a new study room for vets.

The Armed Forces Study Room is a place where service members can feel comfortable and talk with fellow vets. A staff member at the college - whose son Staff Sgt. Derek Farley was killed in 2010 while serving in Afghanistan - said this is great place for veterans to come together.

Carrie Farley, HVCC Secretary and American Gold Star Mothers President, said, "The soldiers end up coming onto our campus missing the camaraderie. The room is there to mentor each other, to join in and gather and be with each other. It enhances their education here on campus. We thank them for their service, welcome them home, and now it is our turn to take care of them."

The New York State Industries for the Disabled also presented the college with a check for $10,000.
