NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- With a day that promises lots of food and family, hundreds of people prepared for their big feasts by hitting the pavement for the New Paltz Turkey Trot.

The weather for the ninth annual tradition was perfect with clear and sunny skies.

Over 1,100 people took part in the race that not only served as a fundraiser, but a calorie burner as well. The money raised will go to "FAMILY of New Paltz," a crisis intervention center that provides shelter, a food pantry, counseling and a 24 hour hotline.

Organizers say it was also a day where participants help give back to the community.

"People come in and they don't ask for their change back when they pay, they make a donation right there at the table and everyone's just digging deep and contributing," said race director Gunther Spillhaus.

Last year's race raised about $60,000 for the organization.
