MARLBORO, N.Y. -- A 16-year-old Newburgh girl was killed following a one car crash early Saturday morning. It happened on Western Avenue near Albertson Road in the Hamlet of Marlboro.

Police say Sarah Smith was riding in an SUV that collided with a telephone pole around 3:30 a.m. They say Smith was thrown from an SUV after Devin Pierre, 18, lost control and hit the pole.

Smith was taken to St. Francis Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Family members say they are still in shock over what happened.

"It's just crazy. She's so little. She was my little angel. We were like best friends. We grew up together and it's just crazy that she's gone. My whole family, they're all in so much pain. We’re all in a lot of pain. Many people know her and everybody knows that she was a great girl, beautiful, beautiful girl, smart, funny, fantastic person. Everybody just loved her. Send your prayers out for me and my family and her. We're gonna need it," said Dominick Morice, Smith’s nephew.

Pierre and a second passenger, a 15-year-old girl, were also taken to the hospital and are listed in stable condition.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
