SULLIVAN COUNTY, N.Y. -- A road stop in Mamakating led to the arrest of a Rockland County man on charges of illegally cultivating marijuana.

Police say Jeffrey Genser was stopped for a traffic violation and when officers approached the car, they could smell marijuana from inside his vehicle. After searching the car, officers found five garbage bags full of harvested marijuana, which led them to a growth operation at his wife's home.

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s office confiscated about 135 plants, which has a street value of $100,000. This comes on the heels of another major marijuana arrest in Sullivan County last week.

Sheriff Mike Schiff says his mission through what the office is calling "Operation Grassroots" is to the fight the larger problem of organized crime.

"One operation we took down was selling to the Bloods in Brooklyn. One operation we took down was organized crime and what these things really mean. These homegrown, is a cash crop. They are going to organized crime, some of these. They are selling the product and then the money is used to buy guns, stronger drugs, safe houses, human trafficking, gambling, any endeavor that you can think of that organized crime or criminals in general would get involved in," said Sullivan County Sheriff Mike Schiff.

Police say they believe that the frequent marijuana arrests startled Gesner and that he was planning on relocating his operation before he was caught.
