SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- A local 12-year-old uses his unique birthday to raise donations for animals in need.

Cole Sawyer actually turned 12 today - on 12/12/12. With that, he set up a goal to raise 1,212 pounds of food for homeless animals and owners who have trouble paying for food. He ended up with a ton of pet food, literally, with more than 2,000 pounds.

"I saw a news article about a man who threw two cats out of his car window and that same day my mother asked what I wanted to do for my birthday, so I had said that I want to help animals," Cole said.

Officials at Schenectady's Brown School say they're proud of students who recognize you're never too young to improve your community.
