WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- It was 57 years ago today that the Tappan Zee Bridge opened. Construction started on the bridge in 1952 and it took about three and a half years to complete.
Governor Averell Harriman signed a bill officially naming it the Tappan Zee Bridge in February of 1956.
Monday could mark the beginning of a new era for the bridge. The Thruway Authority will vote on the selection committee's recommendation for a new bridge.
The committee recommended proposal one, which comes at a price tag of more than $3 billion. Construction could begin as soon as early 2013. It's expected to take about five years to complete.
