UNITED STATES -- North Country Congressman Bill Owens is being investigated by the House Ethics Committee, but the committee says it cannot comment on what the investigation is about.

Back in May, it was reported that Owens took a lobbyists organized trip to Tawain with his wife in 2011. House ethics rules don't allow members of Congress to take trips organized by lobbyists.

Owens said at the time, he thought he was abiding by the rules. He re-paid the $22,000 cost of the trip.

The release from the committee says it started looking into Owens back in August and now needs until late January before coming up with a course of action. But again, when we spoke with the committee office, it said it cannot comment on anything other than the public statement, which doesn't mention a reason.

Owens has since released a statement, saying, “This is the next step in the process and I expect that ultimately it will result in an affirmation of my position that the trip was undertaken in the quest for jobs for my constituents and was done with every intention to comply with all applicable rules. I hold myself and my office to the highest of ethical standards. Which is why, in abundance of caution, I have already personally reimbursed the sponsor of the trip for the cost."
