MONTGOMERY COUNTY, N.Y. – Senator Charles Schumer is launching a campaign to save an expiring tax credit for businesses that hire veterans.

The returning heroes and wounded warriors tax credit is part of an effort to get returning veterans back to work, while also helping area businesses.

Schumer is expected to tour Keymark, an aluminum extruder and the largest private employer in Montgomery County, which employs 73 veterans.

The senator says there are more than 3,000 unemployed veterans in the Mohawk Valley and he urges local businesses and manufacturers to seek out these workers. Schumer adds veterans often fall through the cracks when returning home to civilian employment.

The returning heroes and wounded warriors tax credits give employers up to $9,600, depending on the length of time a veteran has been unemployed. It's set to expire at the end of the year.
