NISKAYUNA, N.Y. -- "I was just cracking up with some of the Shen football players over there, shivering in a huddle. And I said, you guys aren't supposed to be cold. We're supposed to be cold," said Michael Stewart.
Smiles despite the pain from the parents of Chris Stewart. Their son was one of the two teens killed in the Northway accident a few weeks ago. Deanna Rivers was the other victim.
"We're feeling good today. We have our good days and bad days. But today's a good day," said Stewart.
The walk was hosted by the bicycle club HRRT. The club founder, Heather Rizzi, organized the event. She's also had her share of tragedy. Her own brother was killed in a car crash in 1992.
"Chris Stewart, Deanna Rivers, I'll never forget their names. My brother, Jeremy Mason, I'll never forget him," said Rizzi in a speech.
And neither will the many families, friends and neighbors who came out to show support.
"I know she's looking down and she's proud of us and stuff. It's a really good way to remember her and stuff," said Jackie O'Brien, one of Rivers' closest friends.
"I knew him when I was a kid. I played football with him. This is great how everyone came together," said Antonio Rossi, one of Stewarts' friends.
Feelings shared by Stewart's parents.
"It's really nice that it's a community event. We appreciate being included in it. We're really thankful to be here," said Regina Stewart, mother.
About $3,400 in donations was collected at the walk. The money was given to Shenendehowa principal Donald Flynt. A scholarship fund under the names of Rivers and Stewart will be set up. Flynt will also meet with the parents of the victims to discuss a criteria and selection process for the scholarships.
