CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. -- Law enforcement agencies from across the Capital Region have released results from a DWI blanket patrol.

Agencies in several counties, including Albany, Saratoga, Schenectady, Rensselaer, Greene and Schoharie, participated. They used check points and roving DWI patrols in their initiative. They say the goal is to reduce the number of people driving while impaired and to keep the roads safe.

Albany County Sheriff Apple says there were more than 4,600 vehicles stopped, 29 DWI arrests and 103 designated drivers. Apple says some progress has been made but more needs to be done.

"We will be out tirelessly through the holiday season. Again this was an unannounced, we will continue to do unannounced. We will go back and forth. But we feel with the holidays coming, with the prime Christmas parties coming within the next few days, we need to get these numbers out there, we need to let the public know that look, we're not giving up, we're going to continue to fight hard to keep our roadways safe to travel in Albany County and our surrounding counties," said Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple.

And coming up on New Year's Eve, law firm Martin Harding and Mazzati is partnering with law enforcement to help get people home safe. They're offering free rides by calling 1-800-Law-1010.
