CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. -- Gun advocates and anti-gun groups alike are reacting to the President Obama's announcement.

The leaders of the Albany Gun Violence Task Force leaders say they are pleased with the president's push. They say doing things like putting limits on guns and ammo safeguards adults and children.

"We can come together as a community and bring resources together that we all have. Not just for anyone, but for the most precious in the community, our children,” said Rev. Edward Smart with the Albany Gun Violence Task Force.

Appealing to gun owners, Obama said he believes in the Second Amendment and the country's tradition of gun ownership.

Gun shop owners say they're abiding by the nation's laws, and are exercising their constitutional freedoms.

"Only law abiding citizens obey the law. So if you further legislate them, all you are doing is putting guns in criminals’ hands," said Pat Popolizio of Taylor and Vandy Sporting Goods.

The NRA, the nation's most vocal gun rights lobbying group, has scheduled its first news conference to talk about the Connecticut shootings this Friday.
