Apple makes move for Malta?
Rumors are blooming that Apple may be looking to set up shop in Malta. It'd be a natural move, since chip fab plant GlobalFoundries makes the pieces that power things like the iPhone. GlobalFoundries held its quarterly meeting Thursday. Our Erin Vannella reports.

MALTA, N.Y. -- Rumors are blooming that Apple may be looking to set up shop in Malta. It'd be a natural move, since chip fab plant GlobalFoundries makes the pieces that power things like the iPhone.
Right now, Samsung makes the microchips that go in their devices, but there's been some speculation that Apple might abandon Samsung, for another chip fab plant.
Apple could tap GlobalFoundries, or their rival - Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company - to make their chips. But if they do, the company would still have to expand to a place like Malta, to meet the demands of such a large client.
At Thursday night's quarterly progress meeting, leaders at Globalfoundries spoke to some of the rumors.
"Those are the rumors that we read, that we see as well, I have no idea if there's anything behind it, but that seems to be the hot topic," said Travis Bullard, GlobalFoundries spokesperson.
Right now, GlobalFoundries has 150 customers.
They say if Apple chooses TSMC , and they do expand into our area, it just shows GlobalFoundries made the right choice in coming to Malta.
