Town of Wallkill mulling over five offers on old town hall property
The Town of Wallkill is looking to make a big sale in the New Year. The old Town Hall has been on the market since mid-2000. But as the town supervisor explained to our Elaina Athans, 2013 could be "the year" for a deal.

WALLKILL, N.Y. -- "I really think that 2013 is going to be the swing as to where we go," said Town of Wallkill Supervisor Dan Depew.
A big hope in the Town of Wallkill as the New Year is ushered in. 2013 could be when the old town hall finally gets sold. There are currently five offers. The Route 211 property has sat vacant since 2006.
"We're just talking to people and seeing what they would do and how quickly they would be able to close," said Depew.
The offers range from $1.8 million to $2.2 million. Depew says a deal help provide Wallkill financial stability. Depew explains the previous administration borrowed money in the past to balance budgets. Handing over the property would wipe away debt and create a surplus. It's something the town hasn't seen in years.
While Depew says the sale will help finances, he adds the town isn't in dire need for the money is going to be selective on who moves in. For example, one of the potential buyers is looking to put an apartment complex here.
"The area's not zones for it and it kind of changes the look of 211," said Depew. "I'm not looking to make those kinds of sacrifices. I don't think the board is."
Depew says if it isn't ultimately sold, there are some funds set aside thanks to last year's planning to continue paying down the debt.
"We will make the decision when the best offer comes. There’s again the fiscal planning of 2012 that put the town in a much better position to sell the property for what it’s true value is not based on what we need to fill some short-term deficit is," said Depew.
There's no date on when the Town Board will decided on an offer.
