TROY, N.Y. -- Two Troy men have been arrested on animal cruelty charges. Troy Police say they were responding to a domestic disturbance at 16 Park Avenue around 11 p.m. Wednesday, after a neighbor told police they heard a woman call for help.

Police say John Ferrara Junior, 26, and John Ferrara Senior, 59, would not allow the officers into their home. Police had to subdue the two men to gain access, and that is when police say they found a German Shepherd severely malnourished.

"Once inside the officers did in fact find a female subject who told them everything was okay. Sadly, the officers found an adult German Shepherd, The dog was on the floor in the kitchen area, in a coma state. Didn't respond in any way to the disturbance that just occurred," said Capt. John Cooney, Troy Police Department.

Both men are charged with cruelty to animals, resisting arrest, and obstruction of governmental administration. They are being held at Rensselaer County Jail.

The dog was taken to an emergency clinic where it had to be put down.
