HUDSON VALLEY, N.Y. -- A Hudson Valley newspaper that published names and addresses of gun owners is now being protected by armed guards.

The Journal News published online maps of Rockland and Westchester permit holders. The editorial decision has gun rights advocates enraged. Meanwhile, supporters of the Journal's decision cite freedom of speech.

Freedom of information is also being debated after Putnam County decided to deny the Journal's request for a list of gun owners.

The executive director for Open Government in New York says the Journal may be second guessing its editorial decision, but that it absolutely has the right to publish.

"I believe in the law. If we don't like a law, we change it through legal process going to the state legislature. It doesn't seem to me that the county legislature is a good role model to simply say I don't like the law, I don't think it's good, so I'm simply going to ignore it and going to and fail to comply," said Robert Freeman.
