MASSACHUSETTS -- A new law in Massachusetts is now requiring insurance companies to provide the same coverage for chemotherapy pills as they do for infused chemotherapy treatments.
Before Governor Deval Patrick signed the bill into law, infused chemotherapy treatments in clinics were covered as a medical benefit, while the pill version of the treatment was only covered under prescription drug plans. Lawmakers saw the new bill ends the practice of insurers passing the cost of treatment onto the patients.
Many companies opposed the change, calling it a mandate that would add to insurance costs.
