NEW YORK CITY -- The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a ferry accident in New York City that sent roughly 70 people to the hospital. It happened in Lower Manhattan around 8:45 a.m. Wednesday.

The commuter ferry departed Highland, New Jersey around 8 a.m.

Witness accounts say the impact took place as the ferry was approaching the pier. Officials say an estimated 343 passengers and five crew members were on board at the time. Reports are that at least one person is in critical condition.

Some of the passengers hit their heads after being jolted during the rush hour incident.
