Man arrested twice in one week for breaking into cars

NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- A man was arrested twice in one week after police say he broke into cars in the city of Newburgh.

Police say on Monday, Ricardo Torres, 37, was caught trying to break into a car near the Newburgh Free Library with a crow bar. Torres was charged with possession of burglar's tools and possession of a controlled substance, and was released.

Police say they watched undercover surveillance of Torres on Thursday as he walked through city streets. Detectives say they saw him break into an unlocked car near St. Luke's Hospital and take a GPS unit.

Torres was charged with criminal mischief, grand larceny, petit larceny, and criminal possession of stolen property.

City of Newburgh Police are urging residents to not leave valuables in their cars.
