ELLENVILLE, N.Y. -- A village board meeting scheduled for tonight in Ellenville could decide on some big changes.

Mayor Jeff Kaplan will be urging the board to pass a resolution stemming from the school shootings in Newtown, connecticut.

Shortly after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, Mayor Kaplan held a meeting to discuss the possibility of a proposed gun ban in the village.

The meeting was well attended by community members, but the mayor and the board were met mostly with opposition to the idea of a ban.

The response by taxpayers prompted Kaplan to develop several new proposals to keep safety a priority in the community. Some of his ideas include increased public funding for health treatment and counseling, stricter regulations for part of the gun permit process, and more restrictions on assault rifles and high capacity magazines. The mayor also believes every school in New York State should have at least one resource officer.

In his letter to the board, Kaplan said, "Waiting for our federal and state governments to act or simply turning a blind eye assuming it would never happen in my community is a large part of this problem and clearly will not result in reducing the number of events from happening."

Kaplan is calling on members from federal, state and county governments to make changes that better protect their citizens.

Tonight's meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Ellenville Government Center.
