TROY, N.Y. -- Troy police say a homeless man who was tired of living on the cold streets purposely got himself arrested for a place to stay. It happened Friday at the Rensselaer County Clerk's office in Troy.
Officers say Jamaine Makepeace broke several windows in the building, using garbage can lids, before breaking a window on a nearby car.
Police say the rampage caused more than $2,000 worth of damage.
After receiving the call, officers say they were surprised to see Makepeace breaking windows, and then surrendering.
Captain Cooney says it's not uncommon to see crimes committed by people trying to get out of the cold.
Makepeace meanwhile is in the Rensselaer County Jail without bail.
