POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist College community marks one year since the tragic fire that took three young lives.
Marist students, Eva Block and Kerry Fitzsimons, and their friend Kevin Johnson, died
when their off-campus house on Fairview avenue in Poughkeepsie went up in flames January 21st of last year.
A non-denominational memorial service will be held Wednesday in front of Donnelly Hall on the college's campus. At the service, benches will be dedicated in memory of the three students.
Marist College President Dennis Murray sent a statement to the Marist Community, saying in part, "This tragic event was devastating for the victims' families, the students who survived the fire, and the entire college community."
He continued, saying the memorial "will become a permanent physical part of campus, just as their spirits will always live on in our hearts."
The service will begin at 12:45pm on Wednesday, following a special Mass in the campus Chapel at noon. The college counseling center is also open for those who need it.
