MIDDLEBURGH, N.Y. -- Residents can voice their opinions on the possible dissolution of the Village of Middleburgh during a public hearing tonight. A vote will be held next month on whether to dissolve the village into the town.

The referendum was introduced by former Mayor Gary Hayes, who filed a petition for dissolution last October. Hayes says he thinks people should have the right to vote on the idea since it's been talked about for years.

Mayor Matthew Avitable says the move would slightly decrease taxes in the village, but almost double taxes in the town.

Tonight's public hearing is at 7 p.m. in the Middleburgh high school auditorium. The vote will be held on February 19th at the town hall.
