MALTA, N.Y. -- GlobalFoundries could soon be expanding. The chip fab plant has submitted an application to the Town of Malta to change its site plan. That plan includes designs for a second factory.
Adding a second factory to the 223 acre site requires approval from the town to make those zoning changes.
Officials at GlobalFoundries confirm the new "Fab 8.2" addition to the Fab 8 Campus. They say they are only in the initial design and planning phase of this project, and say they're excited about the possibility of expanding their investment and capabilities in New York.
GlobalFoundries officials expect the entire process from site plan approval to getting a building permit to take about six months. The president of the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce says any development would be good for the region.
"Depending on the size and the timing and the technology of the time when they might build a Fab 8.2, certainly it means more jobs, it means more construction jobs as well as the jobs afterwards, means more people coming to the area, buying homes here, shopping here dining here, living here, but again, I don't want to jump too far,” Todd Shimkus, Saratoga Chamber of Commerce.
The first chip fab generated about two thousand jobs, exactly how many jobs this Fab 8.2 would bring if it were approved.
