ALBANY, N.Y. -- Many people who are homeless and also veterans will have some extra layers during this weekend's winter weather. That's thanks to hundreds of donated jackets rounded up by the "Katie's Koats" collection.

The coat drive was started by Kaitlyn Drobner. Drobner helps run a family cafe in the Albany County building. She says she was inspired to collect the coats after seeing so many people out in the cold in New York City.

At best, Kaitlyn says she was expecting 500 jackets.

"But it's nice to see that everyone came together in our community to help pull this together to bring in over 1,200 coats, that's a phenomenal number," she said.

“I say this to the citizens of Albany county: I challenge you, you think you have a great idea, come forward with it. She came to our office, and look at it today, 30 days later," said Daniel McCoy, Albany County Executive.

All of the donated coats were washed courtesy of Best Cleaners.
