PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- There hasn't been anything out of the blue yet at Pittsfield highway yard as the DPW prepares its trucks for the coming snow storm.

"This has really been normal procedure at this point here. Just preparing the trucks, getting everything ready, putting all the blades on," said Peter Bruneau, Superintendent of the city's Public Works Highway Division.

And with 475 tons of salt ready to go and workers being assigned for 12 hour shifts, Bruneau feels that they have a good handle on the situation.

"They're really prepared for it. This is what we do the best of," he said.

According to meteorologists, we're expected to get anywhere from eight to 12 inches of snow. Power outages may happen, so residents are advised to prepare.

"Have food, have water, make sure they've got candles, flashlights, in case their power does go out," said Fire Chief Robert Czerwinski.

It's been a busy day at Pittsfield highway yard as workers prepare for the biggest snowfall of the season. But local officials say this isn't anything new, especially living here in Berkshire County.

"We all like to see a nice New England snow storm. Probably, by Saturday, it'll look like a postcard around here," said Bruce Collingwood, Public Works and Utilities Commissioner.

"It's New England, though, we deal with it. It shouldn't be a real emergency. We've lived with it for hundreds of years and everybody should be prepared by now," added Czerwinski.

The City of Pittsfield will continue to track the snow before making a decision whether to declare a snow emergency. The decision will be made Friday.
