COLONIE, N.Y. -- Department of Transportation crews didn't wait for a layer of snow to hit the ground to get out on the roads. They were out there as soon as it started to snow, salting the roads so that the water didn't freeze and turn into ice.

The DOT garage in Colonie had 1,500 tons of salt ready to go.

But just because people are gearing up for the worst, doesn't mean we'll see the kind of snow expected in New England.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Steve DiRienzo said, "I would say really this is just a routine snow storm. We get a few of these every winter, and we're expecting a warning level snow, which for us means seven or more inches in 12 hours. But we're not going to see blizzard conditions like they will in southeastern New England."

Still, state departments have to prepare for the worst, and the state Office of Emergency Management is monitoring the storm along with the National Weather Service and the Department of Transportation to coordinate any response effort needed.
