AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- Pope Benedict XVI holds extra special meaning to people in the Mohawk Valley.

Back in October, he brought one of their neighbors to Canonization, ending a century’s long process.

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha was born in Auriesville and baptized in Fonda. Since becoming a saint, local organizations, like St. Mary's Hospital, have put statues up to honor her.

“We'll always have that special tie to him because of Saint Kateri. We'll feel gratitude towards him for finally completing this long process of her canonization,” said Sister Danielle Bonetti.

Kateri was the first Native American woman to become a saint.
