WATERVLIET, N.Y. -- A woman tried to run into her burning home to save her dogs after a fire broke out in Watervliet.

Firefighters were called to Eastern Avenue around 2 p.m. Thursday. They arrived to find down power lines and heavy winds blowing smoke far beyond the home where the fire sparked.

The woman who lived there made it out safely, but then unsuccessfully tried to re-enter to rescue her dogs, both of which died.

"It was such a wind driven fire. This whole neighborhood was covered with smoke. She didn't make it very far. She is fine. She did get transported. She seemed to be more in distress than anything," said Latham Fire Chief Robert King.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
