Two are dead and another were two injured in an early-morning car accident on the Thruway. It happened around 1 a.m. by the Coxsackie exit. State Police tell our Megan Cruz that one car had been driving on the wrong side of the highway.

NEW BALTIMORE, N.Y. -- It was a disturbing scene on the Thruway Friday. A charred Ford sedan, a crushed minivan - the wreck left behind after a head-on collision near Exit 21B around 1 a.m. Friday.

Two people were killed: Julian With, 43, of Coxsackie and Carol Dion, 50, of Ontario, Canada. With was behind the wheel of the sedan. State Police said he was driving the wrong way on the highway, going north in the southbound lane. State Police said hit hit a minivan head-on just north of the Coxsackie exit.

Dion was a front-seat passenger in the minivan.

The driver of the minivan, identified as Karen Weller, 39, also of Ontario, and a 4-month-old child, were taken to Albany Medical Center to be treated for their injuries. The infant had been thrown from the car, but both are expected to survive.

Senior Investigator Scott Youngblood tells us the three were headed from Canada to visit family in the Bronx. As for With, Youngblood said they have yet to determine why he was driving on the wrong side of the highway. In their initial investigation, they discovered that on Thursday, With got into trouble with the Bethlehem Police Department for violating an order of protection. Whether that may have something to do with his behavior is unclear right now.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed.
