SOUTH AFRICA -- A South African Judge doesn't believe Olympic Sprinter Oscar Pistorius will run away or interfere with state witnesses.

The judge allowed the 26-year-old runner to go free on bail while he faces a charge of pre-meditated murder, the most serious charge under South African criminal law.

Prosecutors said that Pistorius murdered his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, 29, in the early hours of Valentine's Day.

According to our legal expert, Paul DerOhannesian, Pistorius was helped by submitting a sworn statement to the court, at least in the short run.

"By having him provide sworn testimony, in this case an affidavit, he opens himself up to intense scrutiny by investigators with each and every statement. And, he made that affidavit without knowing what all the evidence in the case was going to be, without knowing what all the witness testimonies were going to be, without knowing what the experts were going to say, without even knowing what the results in forensic testing is going to be and because of that he has taken on a tremendous risk," said DerOhannesian.

Pistorius will appear in court again on June 4th.
