ALBANY, N.Y. -- This month, you may have attended a ceremony in honor of Black History Month. But have you ever thought about getting a history lesson through food?

People gathered at the "Taste of Freedom" event in Albany. Restaurants from around the region were there, offering food samples.

The event also included an art show. Elementary school student's artwork was on display celebrating great moments in African American history.

Local leaders say it's amazing to compare 50 years ago to now.

“Less than 50 years ago was the march on the Lincoln Memorial, thousands of people showed up for Martin Luther King Jr. and 50 years ago is not that long ago. So what people went through 50 years ago versus 2013, it's nice to remember how we got where we got, but we can't forget. And we need to keep striving to be better in the future,” Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy said.

SUNY Albany's Dr. Lee McElroy, was the keynote speaker at the event. He spoke about his childhood and growing up in Texas during the time of segregation.
