CHESTER, N.Y. -- The 33-year-old man who barricaded himself inside a home on High Street is now in custody.

Police say they received a call for a man inside a home armed with a weapon around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. A lockout was put in place at the Chester Union Free School District after police were called in. The street was blocked off on both sides and no one was allowed in the area.

Police believe it was a relationship issue that sparked the situation, but say they are glad it ended safely.

"It took several hours, but State Police and negotiators stuck with it. They were able to get him out without any harm," said Village of Chester Police Chief Peter Graziano.

Dismissal was delayed, but students at the school were safely bused away from the area.

All road blocks have since reopened, as well.
