ALBANY, N.Y. -- Eric Green, the man State Police say was arrested Tuesday afternoon in connection to Sunday's stabbing of a State Trooper, will be arraigned Tuesday evening.

Police say 18-year-old Green was arrested Tuesday afternoon around 12:30 p.m. in the area of Washington and Western avenues in Albany.

Trooper Rodney Smith was working Sunday at the Empire State Plaza when he was allegedly approached by Green, who said he was new in town and needed help. Troopers say as Smith was checking Green's identity, the man stabbed him in the neck. Police say Green ran off with Smith's radio after unsuccessfully trying to also take his gun.

"There was a struggle over the trooper's firearm. The trooper did an excellent job in retaining his firearm in an effort to prevent Green from taking it," said Troop G BCI Captain Tim Munro.

"Based upon the information that we received from Rodney Smith, he indicated the weapon was in the individual’s possession," said NYSP Troop G Commander Major Steve James.

Tuesday night, Green will be arraigned on aggravated assault upon a police officer, robbery, criminal possession of a weapon charges. Troopers tell us Green is known to be homeless, but has ties to both the Albany and Brooklyn area.

Trooper Smith meanwhile, was released from the hospital Tuesday afternoon.
