HIGHLAND, N.Y. -- Parents of Highland High School students are dismayed to learn of a shooting at the high school on Tuesday. It involved a school resource officer. Police said the officer's loaded firearm accidentally discharged. No one was hurt.

Sophomore Mary Jane Nelson said a loud speaker announcement alerted students and teachers of the shooting. "We were all really confused and shocked, and we were like wait, how did that happen. We were all like dumbfounded," said Nelson.

Now according to police the incident occurred at about 1:30pm inside the high school while it was still in session. Police said they're continuing to investigate what caused the officers gun to discharge while he was on foot patrol inside the school.

Highland Central School District Superintendent Deborah Haab addressed the shooting before a school board meeting attended by a number of concerned parents. "We are all very grateful that no one was injured during this incident, and we are confident the Town of Lloyd police will conduct a thorough investigation," said Haab.

According to Lloyd Police Chief Daniel Waag, the high school SRO position was only recently reinstated after funding for it became available again.

"He's a retired police officer who works for us in a part-time capacity," said Waag.

According to police SRO has always been armed. Information some parents claim they never knew. "I think we should have been told they had guns first. It was kind of quiet," said Linda Nelson.

School officials announced the use of police at the high school has been temporarily halted pending the completion of the shooting investigation.
