CAPITAL REGION -- It's tournament weekend and that means a lot of hardware handed out at the America East awards ceremony over on the UAlbany campus on Thursday night for the women.
Let's start with one of our local products, Maple Hill grad Katie Roth was named to the All-Rookie Team as a member of the Hartford Hawks. The redshirt freshman played in all 29 games for Hartford, starting in 15 while averaging about five points and four rebounds per game.
Meanwhile, it was a clean sweep of the major awards for the UAlbany women and it starts at the top. Head Coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson took home the America East Coach of the Year award for the second year in a row.
Coach Abe led the Great Danes to a perfect 16-0 record in conference play this year and the program's first ever regular season title.
It was another big reason for the girls on the court ofr UAlbany.
Senior Guard Ebone Henry raked in the hardware. Henry was the Co-Player of the Year, as well as the Defensive Player of the Year for the third straight season. She is averaging more than 14 points, five rebounds and three assists per game. She also became the program's all-time leading scorer this season. She shared the award with BU's Chantell Alford.
As for freshman sensation Shereesha Richards, she won all those Rookie of the Week awards so it's no surprise that she had the big award coming.
Richards took home Co-Rookie of the Year along with Maine's Liz Wood. Richards is averaging 10 points a game and shooting an amazing 60 percent from the floor this season.
Along with those awards, Senior Julie Forster garnered first team honors as well as All-Defensive and All-Academic accolades. Senior Lindsey Lowrie and sophomore Megan Craig were named to the All-Conference Third Team.
